Rack and pinion gear are an exceedingly efficient mechanism of transferring any kind of rotary motion into linear motion. If we alter the sizes of either the rack or the pinion the rotation/linear travel ratio can be modified as per our requirements. Even force variation can be changed if we change the size of the pinion. At present the most common use for this rack and pinion assembly is for automotive steering systems, but in future we can expect it to be used for other tasks as well.
